CAASSIE SPRING 2022 Scholarship Awards Announced

The CAASSIE Leadership Team is honored to introduce you to the recipients of our Spring 2022 CAASSIE Scholarships.

Thanks to the generous support of our donors, we were able to award scholarships from our invested scholarship fund to two Southwestern College students. Each scholarship award was $500.

We thank our volunteer scholarship readers, staff, and faculty, who reviewed student applications, essays, and references. Finally, we would like to thank our scholarship selection committee for taking time from their busy schedules, during finals week, to interview students and select our final scholarship winners.

Lashaunte Brown

Award: CAASSIE SWC Diamond Award for Nursing in Memory of Lavern Cumby
Major: Nursing.

My educational objective will be to obtain my Associate in Allied Health and transfer to Texas Woman’s University to become a Nurse. My transfer plans will be to go to Texas Woman’s University for my bachelor’s.

My career goal is to become a BSN in Nursing and work in the hospital as a nurse to help my community.

My need for scholarship/financial assistance will be to help pay for supplies I need for my courses, gas for transportation to tutoring and classes, personal items, and to also help pay for housing and utilities.

An obstacle/financial hardship I have endured in pursuit of my education is being a travel Certified Nursing Assistant I, find myself having difficulty in managing my time with work and school. And with Covid, it’s financially difficult to maintain a steady job. With me being in between jobs it’s hard for me to get the supplies I need for school.

Award: CAASSIE SWC Black Alliance Award for Student Excellence
Major: Computer Science

As I began attending Southwestern College while in High School, my objective was to push beyond my limits and go outside my comfort zone to challenge my mindset. I can without effort say that the pandemic has done that for all of us.

My educational objective is to complete my bachelor’s degree in Computer Science. I plan to transfer to a four-year university to obtain that degree. I am blessed to be able to take school in California as the California College Promise Grant has removed the hardship of affording classes. I am also grateful for the Pell Grant that I receive which allows me to maintain the required resources as I attend school.

I am currently involved with my community’s activities at a local mosque. We go there to teach the kids and create an environment for refugees that are forced to leave their land. I have received a Phi Theta Kappa honors society invitation due to my grades within my first year of college.

Obstacles that I currently face are the pandemic and how it has affected us all. Financial resources are low, and we have been deprived of that. Another obstacle that I face is the separation from my family. However, through all this, I persevere with my classes because I know that one day I will be able to look back at these times and say that I have been blessed with a situation and an opportunity!
